When the 2015 NHL Draft Central Scouting Service midterm rankings came out this past week, it was no surprise that a handful of Valley Jr Warrior alums made the list.

Noah Hanifin, Casey Fitzgerald, Colin White and Cam Askew were all a part of the list of players who are projected to be selected in June’s draft which will take place on June 26–27 at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida.

All four players were major contributors on the VJW ’97 Elite team that captured two Massachusetts State Championship titles and advanced to the USA Hockey National Championships in 2010 and 2012 Following the 2012-13 season,

Hanifin, White and Fitzgerald left Massachusetts in order to compete for the U.S. National Under-17 Team, while Askew chose to play in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

Those four players join impressive company as potential first-round selections. Chris Kreider – who spent his entire youth playing for the Warriors – was drafted 19th overall by the New York Rangers in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and has emerged as one of the brightest young NHL stars.

Hanifin is projected to be the third overall pick, behind only Jack Eichel and Connor McDavid. If Eichel or Hanifin are selected first overall, it will mark the first time since 2011 that Massachusetts has had a first-round pick.

In fact, the last Massachusetts player to be drafted as the first overall pick was Winthrop native Rick DiPietro in 2000.

“It is exciting and we are so proud of these players for having the opportunity to be selected so high,” said Steve MacAdams, the VJW’s director of program development and head coach of the VJW ’97 Elite team. “Our program continues to focus on player development and we are happy to see so many excel at such a high level.”
