VJW Junior A Team Caps Off 2014 With Two Big League Wins
The Valley Jr Warriors Junior A team capped off 2014 in winning style by posting key league victories in their final two games of the year.
The Warriors traveled to the International Skating Center of Connecticut in Simsbury to compete in the 2014 EHL Christmas Showcase. Over a three-day period, the Warriors posted two wins and enjoyed a welcome offensive surge by scoring nine goals in two games.
Following a tough 2-1 defeat again the Philadelphia Little Flyers on December 19, the VJW Junior A team recorded a 4-1 win over the New Jersey Rockets and then a 5-1 decision against the Philadelphia Revolution.
“We played two teams that we had lost to previously, so it was good to go out and finish off with scoring some goals,” said Andy Heinze, head coach and general manager of the VJW Junior A team. “We have been struggling with scoring in every game. We have been doing a good job defensively and in net, but just not coming up with the results over the past few weeks or so.” The offensive struggles came to a
timely end as the Warriors will enjoy a two-week break. The team’s next
game is scheduled for January 10 at the Haverhill Valley Forum against
the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs.
The two-week reprieve will allow the players to reflect on what was a dominating final two games in 2014.
Against the Rockets, the Warriors exploded with three unanswered goals in the first seven minutes. Will Platt – the lone VJW scorer from the night before – netted the team’s first tally at the 1:05 mark. Austin O’Rourke and Van Sullivan followed and then Alex Lester capped off the win in the final stanza with an empty netter.
It was much of the same one day later as Brendan Heinze, O’Rourke, Lester and Brett Boyer all scored in the first period. Chris Mayer netted the team’s final tally en route to the 5-1 win. Kris Holmes and Sullivan added two assists each.
“It was good for the kids and it makes going on a two-week break
a lot easier,” said Heinze. “Hopefully that jumps starts us into the
second half of the season and into the final stretch.”
Also making news that week was the announcement that the Valley
Jr Warriors joined seven other EHL organizations that will enter teams
in the EHL Elite Division for 2015-16.
