VJW Alumni Feature - Jake Kulevich of #6 Colgate University
AR_301169610.jpg_MaxW_650.jpgThroughout the season, the Valley Jr Warriors will highlight the accomplishments of its alumni who are currently competing at top collegiate programs.

This week’s feature is on Jake Kulevich!

With the Thanksgiving holiday quickly approaching, many former VJW players will take a brief break from college life to return home.

One of those former Warriors is Marblehead’s Jake Kulevich, who spent more than 10 years competing as a Valley Jr Warrior beginning as a peewee minor back in 2004.

These days, Kulevich is a key player for the 6th-ranked Colgate men’s hockey team which has posted seven wins thus far in ECAC action. He has played in all 10 of his team’s games and posted his first goal of the season in a 5-1 victory over Princeton last weekend.

Last year as a freshman, Kulevich appeared in 38 games for the Raiders and was voted one of the team's most improved players. The blueliner had nine points and was named to ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team.

Following his freshman year, Kulevich was invited to and participated in NHL Developmental Camp conducted by the San Jose Sharks.

Four years ago,  Kulevich had helped lead the Marblehead High School boys hockey team to the Division 3 state championship at the TD Garden. He also was a key player for the VJW '93 Elites... a team that won the Massachusetts Tier 1 State Championship five times and advanced to the USA Hockey Nationals on two occasions.

Earlier this year, Kulevich took part in an interview with his Wicked Local newspaper where he spoke about facing off against ECAC foe Mike Vecchione who is a standout for Union College. Here is what he said about that relationship and the strength of hockey here in the Bay State.

"Yeah, actually Mike and I grew up playing hockey together for the Valley Jr. Warriors program. He’s been a lifelong friend of mine, and our families are really close. We actually won a championship together at Lake Placid when we were really young. It’s funny how things work out.

I talked to him and his parents after the game, and it was great seeing them. In terms of Mass. hockey, I think I speak for Mike too when I say we wouldn’t have taken any other route to get where we are today. The experiences we had growing up and through high school are ones that put us in a position to eventually reach our goals of playing college hockey."
