Two out of three is not bad. And when you are playing in one of the most competitive junior hockey leagues on the Northeast, it's downright impressive.
The VJW Junior A squad moved up the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) standings with two critical league victories at this weekend's Columbus Day Showcase which was held at the Cyclones Arena in Hudson, N.H.
All 19 league members were there as well as scores of top collegiate and NHL scounts.
Traditionally the Columbus Day Showcase is one of the strongest scouting events in all of Tier III Junior hockey based upon the number of games, the timing of the event, which is held prior to NCAA Division III teams starting their seasons and the centrally located venue in the backyard of 80+ NCAA ice hockey programs. It was indeed the place to be this past weekend to see some of the stars of the future.
The Warrior players did not disappoint as the team posted victories against New York Applecore on Saturday and the Hartford Jr. Wolfpack on Sunday.
Saturday's victory against New York Applecore was a welcome result after a tough 3-2 loss the day before against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights.
In that 3-2 defeat, the Warriors outscored their opponent by a 2-0
margin the second period but were unable to notch that tying goal as
seconds counted down in the final stanza.Van Sullivan and Brendan Heinze found the back of the net in that contest.
The following afternoon, Collin Soucy
turned away 15 of 16 shots and Kris Holmes and Jon Skarlis scored
within a minute of each other in the second period to lead the Warriors
to a 2-1 win.
Against the Wolfpack, the two teams fired 37 shots but it was the VJW
Junior A team that proved to have more firepower.
Johan Winblad - off
assists from Justin DeWitz and Hunter Wilhoite - took advantage of a
Wolfpack penalty to go up by a score of 1-0. Will Platt added the team's
second goal for a 2-0 advantage. Hartford would score the next two
goals, but Holmes secured the victory at the 24:34 mark of the second
