Valley Jr Warrior Junior A Team Soars Into Second Round of EHL Playoffs

141387_small.jpgThe Valley Jr Warriors Junior A team has been the talk of the junior hockey world this past week.

Less than one week ago, Andy Heinze’s squad delivered the biggest upset in Eastern Hockey League (EHL) history by knocking off the third-seeded Connecticut Oilers in the first round of EHL Playoffs.

The Warriors entered the playoffs as the 14th seed, but the talented squad saved their best for playoff time and made a statement to the rest of the league by winning the best-of-three game series against the Oilers. It marks the fourth straight year that the Warriors have advanced to at least the second round of the playoffs.

As a result of the team’s first-round victory, the Valley Jr Warriors will now take on the top-seeded New Hampshire Monarchs beginning on Friday. Here is a complete schedule of the quarterfinal series.

Friday, March 7 @ 7:10 PM

Saturday, March 8 7:15 PM

Sunday, March 9 @ 4:10 PM

Valley Jr Warriors players and fans are encouraged to come out and support the Warriors as they look to take down the top seed and continue their run through the EHL playoffs!

The Warriors traveled to Connecticut to face off against the Oilers last Friday. The Oilers jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead less than a minute into th game. The Warriors tied it up – thanks to a Shane Tracy tally at the :08 mark of the second period – but the host team went on to post two unanswered goals to jump out to a 1-0 series lead.

The Warriors returned to the friendly confines of the Haverhill Valley Forum the following evening and made an early statement that they would be a team to be reckoned with down the stretch. Emil Blomquist scored back-to-back tallies in a four-minute span to give the Warriors an early 2-0 lead following the first period of play. Connecticut responded with three unanswered goals, but the Warriors responded. Charlie Widmar netted his 9th tally of the season at the 7:20 mark of that period. Troy Sutherland – with an assist to Widmar – lit the lamp just five minutes later to give the Warriors a 4-3 advantage and extend the series to a third and decisive game.

Sunday, March 2

In the third and final game of the series, it appeared that the Oilers would cash in on the home-rink advantage as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than four minutes into the second period. However, the Warriors would respond and battled their way into the second round of playoffs.

Jordan Deckard and Mikkel Joehnk both scored in the second period to equal the game at 2-2 heading into the third period. The game remained deadlocked until  Joehnk netted his second goal of the game at the 17:15 mark of the third period to give the Warriors its first lead in the contest. With the Oilers pressing and their goalie pulled, the Warriors stayed strong and capped off the dramatic comeback with two empty-net tallies by Brendan Heinze and Kris Holmes

The performance not only drew praise from fans and spectators, but it also earned the team top league headlines!
