If it was a game of baseball, the Warriors would be batting .500.
Regardless of the sport, the final outcome was equally impressive as the VJW program took home three titles at the 2013 Warrior Thanksgiving Tournament.
In a holiday tradition that featured more than 50 teams from across the nation, the Warriors were simply dominating. Capturing divisional titles – earned over a three-day period – were the VJW ’00 Elites, VJW ’01 Elites and the VJW ’04 Elites.
In addition to the four championship wins, the Warriors also sent six out of its registered eight teams to the playoffs. During the two-day round-robin section of the tournament, the VJW teams combined for an astounding 22-2-4 record and posted an average 9.4 goal differential
Here is a summary of play in each division.
With two teams competing in the division – ’99 Half and ’99 Full – the Warriors were well represented as they both notched two victories during the round-robin portion of the tournament. When the final tally was taken on Saturday evening, only the ’99 Half team advanced to the semifinals against the New Hampshire Monarchs, another nationally-ranked program.
Although the Warriors fell short by a score of 5-3 in the finals, the team posted impressive victories against Westchester 99 and Lakeshore Panthers 99 as well as a tie against CP Dynamo 99.
Through the first two days of play, the ’00 Elites posted a 4-0-0 record and outscored its opponents by a 30-to-9 margin. The Warriors knocked of the LI Gulls 00 (8-2), DS Riverhawks 00 (7-3), Seacoast 00 – E (8-3) and Walpole Express 00 (7-1).
As the top seed, the Warriors had no problem defeating the Walpole Express for a second straight time to set up a showdown with Seacoast 00 – E. The two teams may be separated by just one point in the current New England Hockey League (NEHL) standings, it was all Warriors in the end as the ’00 Elites skated to a 6-2 championship victory.
After posting a convincing 9-1 win over the Boston Jr Penguins 01 on Friday morning, the Warriors posted an important 3-3 tie against the Minuteman Flames 01. A 9-2 win over the CT Yankees 01 propelled the Warriors into the semifinals where they outlasted the Wizards 01 – E in an exciting 4-3 shootout.
The Warriors then avenged an early-tournament loss against the Boch Blazers by skating to a 3-1 victory in the championship game.
During the first two days, the Warriors posted wins against Neponset Valley 02 (7-0), Vipers 02 – E (4-1) and RI Saints 02 (3-0) and then a tie against the LI Gulls 02 (5-5). The 3-0-1 record earned the team a spot in the semifinals where they dominated the CP Dynamo 02 by a score of 10-1.
In the final game, the Warriors could not get past the LI Gulls 02 as the team settled for a strong second-place finish.
Riding a 10-game winning streak dating back to early October, the Warriors began the Warrior Thanksgiving Tournament in strong fashion with an 11-1 win over the Boston Bandits 03. The team followed that up with two-goal victories against Seacoast 03 – E (6-4) and LI Royals 03 (4-2). They capped off the round-robin portion of the tournament with a 6-0 win over the Boch 03 – E.
In the semifinals, the Warriors ran into a red-hot Avalanche 03 - E team which prevailed in overtime by a score of 4-3.
The Warriors kicked off the tournament with a 7-0 decision against the Boch 04 – E and then followed that up with a 1-1 tie against the Jr. Rangers 04 – E. Two more wins were posted by the ’04 Elites against the Monarchs 04 – E (6-4) and RI Saints 04 (4-0).
The Warriors skated to a 4-2 semifinal win against the Seacoast 04 - E and then secured the championship title with a 3-1 win over the Jr Rangers 04E.
