VJW Junior A Team Cruises Into EJHL Quarterfinals... Again!
For the third season in a row, the VJW Junior A team has advanced to the quarterfinals of the EJHL Gary Dineen Cup Playoffs.
The Warriors - as the third-seeded team in the Northern Division - hosted the Connecticut Oilers on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Haverhill Valley Forum and posted two impressive victories.
On Tuesday, VJW netminder Brendan Leahy shut out the Oilers throughout the first period. Connecticut jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 31 seconds into the third period. The Warriors battled back in that final stanza as Joe Lappin put the home team on the board at the 3:17 mark from Brendan Collier and Gus Harms. Nick Leonard tied the game with 6:25 remaining. John Jackson assisted on the play. Perry Holcombe ended the game midway through the extra session with assists from Jackson and Devin Tringale (shown right). The next day - on February 27 - the Warriors used a balanced offensive
attack to post a 6-1 victory which assured them a spot in the
quarterfinals. Scoring for the home team was Jackson, Tringale, Lappin, Ryan Fitzgerald, John Needham and Nick Pichette.
In those two games, the Warriors fired a total of 116 shots, including
63 on Wednesday. Leahy registered 47 saves in his two wins between the
pipes for the Warriors.
Following this week's play-in games, the eight advancing teams will be
re-seeded based on the number of league points. The quarterfinals will
be held on March 2nd and March 3rd at a location to be announced.
