VJW Teams Shine at 2012 Warrior Thanksgiving Tournament

02Elites_Thanksgiving2012_500.jpgIn what was a showcase of some of the region’s top youth hockey teams, the VJW program rose to the top as three of its squads picked up divisional titles at the 2012 Warrior Thanksgiving Tournament.

With eight teams competing in this year’s event which included three days of round-robin and playoff competition, three VJW teams – ’00 Elites, ’01 Elites and ’02 Elites – won their division titles and took home the coveted trophies.

Here is a summary of some of the exciting action and top-notch performances by the VJW squads.

The VJW 00 Elites are undefeated (14-0-0) in New England Hockey League play, so it was no surprise that the team performed well once again at the Warrior Thanksgiving Tournament.

During the first day of play, the Warriors skated past the NJ Devils by a score of 7-2 before exploding for 11 goals en route to a 11-0 decision over the Assabet Valley 00 – Elite. The Warriors met their toughest challenge on Saturday. The team skated to a 1-1 tie against the Seacoast 00 – Elite, but rebounded later that day with a 3-0 blanking of the Bay State Breakers 00.

Come playoff time, the Warriors were prepared. The team first defeated the NY Saints 00 by a score of 7-1 and then closed out the championship with a strong 4-0 win against the Avalanche 00 - Elite on Sunday afternoon.

The VJW 01 Elites were in the midst of a four-game losing streak, but then came the month of November. Since November 3rd, the Warriors have posted eight straight games including five victories as part of the Warrior Thanksgiving Tournament.

On Friday, the Warriors began their title pursuit with a 5-3 win over the Neponset Valley 01s. The team went on to knock off NEHL foe Boch Blazers 01 – Elite by a score of 4-1.

The second day was all about offensive domination. First it was an 11-3 win over the Amherst Knights 01 and then it was a decisive 8-1 victory against the CT Wolfpack 01.

The Warriors defeated the Minuteman Flames 01 (6-4) to set up a showdown with NEHL divisional leaders Wizards 01 – Elite. Although four points ahead of the Warriors in the NEHL 00 American Standings, the home team was up for the challenge as they pulled off the upset win by a score of 2-0 in Haverhill.

The VJW 02 Elites scored 17 goals and held their opponents to just two goals during the first day of competition at the Warrior Thanksgiving Tournament. That early-action play set the tone for what was to come over the next two days.

On Saturday, the Warriors held off the Boch Blazers 02 – Elite by a score of 5-3 and then knocked off the Long Island Gulls 02 – 5-2 – to advance to the semifinals. In the first playoff showdown, the Warriors nipped the Wizards 02 – Elite by a score of 2-1 and then defeated Seacoast 02 – Elite – 4-1 - to win the title.

  • In the 2003 Division, the VJW 03 Elites won five games to advance to the Sunday final where they were edged by a score of 3-2 by the Vipers 03 – Elite.
  • The VJW 99 Elites  advanced to the playoffs as they fell in the semfinals to the Vipers 99 – Elite.
  • This year’s event featured six divisions (1999 through 2004) that were comprised of 54 teams from across the country.
  • All games contested at the Haverhill Valley Forum were broadcast live by Fast Hockey
  • Congratulations to all teams on a job well done!
