Sam Kurker & Brendan Collier Selected in 2012 Entry Draft
home_2012NHLDraft_v2.jpgTwo Valley Jr Warrior players enjoyed the 2012 NHL Entry Draft as they have taken a big step towards their dreams of playing professional hockey.

Sam Kurker and Brendan Collier were selected at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft which was held this past week at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“We could not be any prouder of these two outstanding players,” said Fred Devereaux, the VJW’s director of player development. “It has been an honor watching them develop, and we all look forward to seeing them excel at the next level.”

These latest picks continue what has been a strong showing by VJW athletes at the NHL Entry Draft. One year ago, Colin Blackwell - a rising sophomore at Harvard University - was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the seventh round (194th overall), while Chris Kreider stole headlines in 2009 when he was the first round pick (19th overall) by the New York Rangers.

This time around - with their second pick of the 2012 Entry Draft (and 56th overall) - the St. Louis Blues selected Kurker, who is considered one of the top power forwards in New England.

Kurker (click here to learn more about Kurker's journey from the VJW to the NHL) was ranked 36th in North America by the NHL's Central Scouting Service in their Final rankings (up from 41st overall at Midterm) and is coming off an impressive career at St. John’s Prep (Danvers). Over the last two seasons for the Eagles, the 6-2, 198-pound Kurker posted 52 goals in 49 games.

“I am confident that Sam’s style of play will translate well to the pro game,” said St. John’s head coach Kristian Hanson to the College Hockey Prospective. “Sam has the frame and ability to be an effective power forward at that level. It is exciting for Sam and and St. John’s Prep, that we may be looking at the second player in two years to be drafted out of our program. Sam knows there is much work to still be done, but he is up to the task.”

Before he suits up for the St. Louis Blues, Kurker will first take his talents to Boston University beginning in 2013.

Another future Terrier – Collier – also enjoyed this week’s draft as he was selected in the seventh round (189th overall) by the Carolina Hurricanes. Much like Kurker, Collier has been a dominating force here locally. As a star for Malden Catholic, Collier has helped his team to two straight Massachusetts Division 1A Hockey Championships. A potent offensive talent, Collier netted 75 points during the 2010-2011 season and 64 points in 22 games this past year. Before he makes his way to play for Boston University, however, Collier will continue to hone his skills as he will suit up for the VJW Junior A team this fall.

“They have been able to deliver at every level,” said Devereaux, who manages the VJW's weekly power skating program. “These top NHL teams have certainly shown that that they realize that these two players have both the skills and the commitment to succeed in the NHL.”
