VJW '01 Selects Continue to Roll in Holiday Tournament Play
The VJW ’01 Selects continue to enjoy a solid season. The most recent kudos came at the 2011 Snowball Tournament where the squad captured the championship title over tough competition.
This latest victory was especially sweet since the Warriors knocked off - in the finals - the Rhode Island Saints... a Northeast Hockey foe that the Warriors had lost to five times dating back to last season.
"The boys played extremely well for all 45 minutes,” said Tom McGoldrick, head coach of the VJW ’01 Selects. “Their consistent effort throughout the game was the key factor against a very strong Rhode Island Saints team."
That type of consistent effort has been a key factor for the VJW ’01
Selects all season long as they have been working their way up the
standings in the Hockey Northeast.
It also seems like the holidays are especially sweet for this team.
After all, the Warriors captured a divisional title at the 9th Annual
Rinks at Exeter Turkey Tournament held during the Thanksgiving break.
"Overall, the team has really improved in all three zones this year,”
said McGoldrick. “The players effort at practice is really paying off
and their play continues to improve. The tournament victory reflect a
great effort in all four games."
That type of winning play was on display at the 2011 Snowball Tournament
held at the Foxboro Sports Center. The day after Christmas, the
Warriors cruised to a 6-2 win against the Conquistadors. The following
day, they skated to a 4-4 tie against the Terriers before falling by a
score of 5-2 to the Saints.
That loss did not deter the Warriors, however. McGoldrick’s team came
out firing during the final day as they battled to a 4-3 championship
victory against that same Saints team.
"The team played extremely well in our own zone with strong team defense
and outstanding goaltending by Charlie Murphy in the championship
The Warriors will now look forward to more league games during the
winter months... including another Hockey Northeast showdown with the
Rhode Island Saints on January 22 at the Haverhill Valley Forum.
If this latest victory was any indication, the Warriors will be more than ready for that challenge.
Congratulations to the entire VJW ’01 Selects team on a job well done!
