VJW '03 Selects Skate to Victory During the Holiday Break
The VJW ’03 Selects had a lot to celebrate this past holiday season. In addition to spending important time with family and friends, the young and talented squad also traveled to the New England Sports Center in Marlborough to take part in the North American Winter Championship.
What ensued over a four-day period was simply magical. Facing off against both elite and select talent, the Warriors came through with a championship victory in the Silver division.
“I'm so proud of the entire team,” said Joe O’Grady, head coach of the VJW ’03 Selects. “It felt like we flipped a switch and everything we've been working on is coming together. They should all be very proud of their play this week.”
It all began during the three-game parity round where the Warriors
battled through one win and two losses. They fell to the Minuteman
Flames AAA and the Minuteman
Flames Elite, but the
Warriors came through with an important 2-1 win over the Northstar Selects. As a result of their play, they were the top seed heading
into the Silver Division playoffs.
In the team’s semifinal showdown with the Middlesex Islanders, the VJW
’03 Selects put on an offensive show en route to a 7-3 win. Leading the
charge offensively from the blueline were Joe O'Keefe (1-0-1), Colin Richmond (0-2-2) and Chris O'Grady (3-1-4).
“The team played great especially down the stretch,” said O’Grady.
“Defensively the entire team picked up the pace with strong back check
and positional play.”
When championship game time arrived... the Warriors were ready for the
challenge as they skated to a 2-0 shutout victory over the Northstar
Selects.
“The defense core of Gavin Belt, Claire Murphy, Drew Tobia and Colton Potter played their best games of the season and have really made a difference to our team,” said O’Grady. “Lucas Canelli in goal had the shutout and was absolutely stellar turning away every shot effectively and with great confidence.”
Congratulations to the VJW ’03 Selects on a job well done!
