Colin Blackwell Feeling Right At Home in Cambridge
Screen_shot_2011_12_13_at_9.28.12_PM.pngIt didn’t take long for former VJW star Colin Blackwell to make himself at home in Cambridge. The North Andover native who who spent most of his developmental years playing for the Warriors has played in all 10 games this season for Harvard University and is establishing himself as an impact player.

In those 10 games, Blackwell has posted three goals and three assists and ranks sixth on the team in goals scored and third in total assists. He also - back on November 29th - was named the ECAC Rookie of the Week after netting the tying and go-ahead goals in the third period of the comeback win against New Hampshire. Harvard currently sits in a tie for fourth place in the ECAC with a 3-3-2 conference record.

It is no surprise that Blackwell is making an impact at Harvard. After all, the 5-foot-8, 164-pound forward was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the seventh round of the NHL Entry Draft (194th overall) earlier this year.

Prior to that, he enjoyed a memorable senior season at St. John’s Prep (Danvers) where he led the Eagles to the Super Eight tournament finals and was named the Catholic Conference’s Most Valuable Player. During his senior season, Blackwell set a St. John’s Prep single-season scoring record with 66 points in 25 games last season, earning the Robbie Ftorek Award as the Massachusetts High School Hockey Coaches Association’s player of the year. He was also +42 during the regular season.

While a Warrior, Blackwell was part of a ’93 Elite team that was one of the first to compete on a national level and – much like Blackwell – many of the players have recently committed to top Division 1 schools. Included in that impressive list of VJW alumni are Chris Eiserman (UMass Lowell), Mike Vecchione (UNH) and Alex Gacek (Miami University - Ohio), to name just a few.

Over a four-year period from 2003 through 2006, the Warriors captured four straight Massachusetts Hockey Select League Championships and posted more than 100 straight wins in league play. He also led his VJW teams to USA Hockey Nationals in 2006, 2008 and 2009.

Blackwell - along with his Harvard teammates - are currently taking a break from hockey to concentrate on final exams. The Crimson will next be in action on December 30-31 when they faee off against North Dakota in Grand Forks.
