I've written the same opening line for years.
It's the most wonderful time of the year. The calender tells us its
September, but if you are a student, athlete, teacher, parent or coach -
it's a new year. It's a new chapter in the long journey of education,
athletics, friendships and memories.
Time is the one
uncontrollable enemy in our lives - how we use it and how we manage it -
is how we are measured. Back to school is the time for a new classroom,
a new teacher, new friends and that new kid who just moved in from out

a better student and shoot for the honor roll every term. Will you be
more respectful to your teachers, coaches and classmates? Will you make
that new student feel welcome? Will you be the more prepared student in
the class for every quiz and test? Will you outwork all of your
teammates, outhustle every opponent, work on your weaknesses and help
that teammate that may be struggling?
Find a role model - it could be
someone in a class ahead of you who does all of the right things and is
headed for a great college. Use your time to form your unique identity
that will earn you the respect of your teachers, coaches and classmates.
Make this the best year of your life. Growing older is mandatory -
growing up is optional. Time is marching forward, make sure you aren't
