Former VJW Standout Joe Cucci Leads Merrimack to NCAA Tournament
The
Merrimack men's hockey team advanced to the Hockey East finals for the
first time in program history and earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1988 Much of that success had to do with one of the team's senior leaders and former VJW Junior A standout Joe Cucci (Melrose Park, IL). Merrimack's third leading scorer with 14 goals and 21 assists, Cucci netted 10 power-play goals which ranked 10th in the nation and
represented the most such goals scored by a Warrior player since 2006.
His 21 total power-play points ranked fourth in Hockey East!
Throughout his two-year VJW career, Cucci was a
dominating force in the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL). During the 2004-05
season, he led the EJHL with 29 goals and a league-leading 50 assists for 79
points. His second year brought much of the same domination as he served as
team captain and led the way with 29 goals and 24 assists. After spending one year at Northeastern, Cucci
transferred to Merrimack where he has flourished since the 2007-08 season. A three-time Hockey East
All-Academic Team honoree, scored 51 goals during his first three years at
Merrimack.
