Teams Prepare for 2010 Warrior Thanksgiving Tournament

With the holidays just around the corner, more than 70 teams (including eight VJW squads!!) from across North America are prepared to make their way to Haverhill to take part in the 2010 Warrior Thanksgiving Tournament.

Launched just three years ago, the annual showcase of youth hockey talent has grown exponentially each year to accommodate the growing number of teams looking for a competitive holiday tournament. This year’s event – which will be held on November 26 through November 28 – features seven divisions (1997 through 2003) that are comprised of 74 teams from across North America.

“This year’s event is the largest to date and we are excited for three days of great competition,” said Steve MacAdams, the director of program development who has been a driving force behind the growth of the VJW’s tournament program. “What is most encouraging is that our field of teams includes a mixture of new and returning programs across all age divisions.”

Just some of the teams that are making the trek to Haverhill for the first time this year include Druzbha 78, Ukraine (’97 Division), Calgary Royals (’97 Division), West Seneca Wings (’99 Division), Milton Ontario Winterhawks (’00 Division) and Mercer Chiefs (’01 Division).

Over Friday and Saturday, the teams will compete in four round-robin games. The semifinals and the finals will be held on Sunday when champions will be crowned in all seven divisions. Serving as the headquarter facility throughout the event will be the Haverhill Valley Forum, which – since its opening three years ago – has become a home for some of the most competitive tournaments in the country.

“We are fortunate to have one of the best facilities in the country,” said Fred Devereaux, the VJW's director of player development. “Teams that come here to compete enjoy the experience and want to return. We are trying to increase our offerings each season.”

It’s not hard to understand why the state-of-the-art, twin rinks facility has become a draw for even the best junior and youth programs. Since opening its doors in February 2007, the Haverhill Valley Forum has hosted thousands of hockey games from mite to Junior A level. It serves as the home of the Valley Jr Warriors, Masco Youth Hockey and the Skating Club of Andover.

A tour of the facility makes it easy to understand why players and spectators alike are enjoying the experience. The premier sports center features two 200' x 85' ice surfaces, a spacious, glassed-enclosed mezzanine level overlooking both ice surfaces, full-service pro shop and concessions center, 12 team locker rooms and a training facility operated by Athletic Evolution, to name just a few of the many amenities.

Results for all games will be posted throughout the weekend... and spectators are invited to attend free of charge.

Best of luck to all participants!!
