Annie Grab Your Stick - By Mike Lynch  If I had to chose one player to start a team in any sport I would select Annie Garofalo of Medfield High School. Who is Annie Garofalo you ask? Annie is a member of the varsity field hockey
team. Her motto is simple,
"I like showing people what I can do as
opposed to what I can't do." You see Annie was born without a left hand.
Showing people what she can do has been her creed. She has been
challenged but never detoured, never defeated. " I don't say much to
people who tell me I can't do something, I just show them I can do
everything a normal person can do and sometimes do it better."
Annie has been playing field hockey since the 8th grade and in this,
her senior year, she finally made the varsity squad. She didn't whine
or complain each year when she was cut or assigned to the jayvees, she
made it her passion to work hard and make the team. " Annie is a quiet,
unassuming girl, says her coach Mike Mason. Most of the time her
handicap goes unnoticed but I was thinking her story has to get noticed
and I'm glad it has."
Annie is also a member of the varsity tennis team, the National Honor Society, French National Honor Society,
The French Club and the Debate Team. She is in the top ten percent of
her class, has a 3.93 GPA, an A student ( with a B+ in Calculus) and
has been a strong advocate of disability awareness - often speaking to
elementary school students. Her message "Don't judge a book by its
cover. Just because a person looks like they have a disability doesn't
mean they are disabled."
Annie has applied to a number of Ivy
League schools and her top choice is Harvard. So if I'm starting a
college freshman class, guess whose application I am stamping
"ACCEPTED?"
