The Year to Remember Continues for Former VJW Player Chris Kreider

Kreider_C_0929_Watch.jpgThe thrilling year just keeps continuing for Chris Kreider. The former Valley Jr Warriors standout and rising sophomore for the national championship Boston College Eagles squad, is riding high once again.

This past week, Kreider was added to the 2010 U.S. Men’s National Team that will compete at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Men’s Championship on May 7-23 in Cologne, Geisenkirchen and Mannheim, Germany.

Although the roster has not yet been finalized, Kreider is one of only a handful of collegiate players to be named to the team and will compete alongside some of the NHL’s top players including Jack Johnson (Los Angeles Kings), David Moss (Calgary Flames), Mike Lundin (Tampa Bay Lightning) and Eric Nystrom (Calgary Flames).

“I can’t think of many college-level players who have been selected for this team,” said VJW Director of Player Development Fred Devereaux. “It is an incredible achievement for Chris and it says a lot about what he has been able to accomplish over the past year.”

It has indeed been a whirlwind season for Kreider, who spent more than 10 years in a VJW jersey and was most recently a member of Ken Cleary’s VJW U-18 team.

The most recent 2010 NCAA Division I Championship title was icing on the cake as Kreider was part of a Boston College team that captured the Beanpot title in February and then followed that up with a Hockey East title. Along the way, Kreider was also a member of Team USA which captured the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship. This will mark his first U.S. Men's National Team appearance.

It’s also important to note that prior to the start of the collegiate season, Kreider was selected in June by the New York Rangers in the first round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. According to the final Central Scouting Rankings, Kreider entered the 2009 NHL Entry Draft as the highest ranked high school player and the 14th overall among North American skaters.

“I told him not to expect every year to be like 2010,” said Devereaux, who also serves as a scout for the Calgary Flames. “He is such a humble kid, and he always comes back in the summer and works in our camps. He’s very accessible, and he’s great with the younger kids. He started out as a Mite here and went all the way up through Bantams and Midget U18s.

“I’ve been in the game a long time, but you don’t see kids like Chris very often, with the whole package on and off the ice.”
