As the calender turns at each new year we are full of resolutions and promises.
This year I will start an exercise program, a diet or some other commitment that usually fizzles by the end of the month. Athletes are no exception, but like everyone else, we too tend to fail to deliver on all of our promises.
So I ask all of you who read this page, whether a player, parent, coach or fan to join me in a pledge for 2010.
You don’t have to raise your right hand but repeat after me.
“In 2010 I will……
Take as much, or more, pleasure in an assist than scoring a goal
Consider it a great day with a win, even though you were held without a point
At least once this season thank mom or dad for driving you to every game and practice
Thank a relative or a neighbor for coming to watch you play
Help the coach pick up all the equipment after a game or practice
Be kind, patient and understanding with a player that is struggling
Never utter a harsh word to a referee or ice official
Skate every shift as if it is sudden death of the last game of the year
Call your goalie at home or on his cell after a tough loss
Every time you lace up your skates say to yourself “I will give it my all today!"
