Valley Jr Warriors Junior As Enjoy Weekend Sweep Over CD Selects
When you’re on a roll, you’re on a roll. The Valley Jr Warriors Junior A team posted its first weekend sweep of the season by posting two key league wins over the CD Selects.
Following a 5-2 win on Saturday in which team-leading scorer Christian Cowles (shown right) notched one goal and three assists, the Warriors scored two times in the second and third periods to outlast the Selects by a score of 5-3. This weekend’s performance continues what has been an impressive stretch of play as the Warriors have won five of their last eight games.
Leading the charge on Saturday was Christian Cowles (Andover, MA). In that contest, the 6-foot, 185-pound forward figured in on four of his team’s five goals en route to a 5-2 victory. Through two games, Cowles – the team’s leading scorer with six goals and 13 assists in 18 games – enjoyed a plus/minus rating of +3.
The following day another hero emerged. Riki Retelle (Andover, MA) exploded for two goals and two assists to spearhead his team to a 5-3 win over the CD Selects. On the weekend, Retelle had a plus/minus rating of +2, was a leader on the power play (both goals came with the man advantage) and notched what proved to be the game winner at the 3:55 mark of the third period.
Jeff Wyer (Reading, MA) and Nick Betti (Barnstable, MA), who shared netminding duties this past weekend, backstopped the Warriors to victory as they registered 27 saves each.
An interesting note… through 18 games the Warriors have been involved in three overtime games and have posted an impressive record of 3-0-1.
Next up for the VJW is a series of three games that will be played as part of the 2009 Warrior Classic.
