VJW Junior Bs Highlight Playoff Weekend in Haverhill
vjw_448juniorb.jpgThe Valley Jr Warriors B team will be in action this weekend at the Haverhill Valley Forum as the Warriors are one of eight teams from the Empire Hockey League that will compete in quarterfinal contests. The Warriors will first take on New Hampshire at 7:00 p.m. Following Friday’s games, the eight-team field will be reseeded in preparation for Saturday’s deciding games. The winners will advance to the 2009 Final Four in Foxboro.

Also featured this weekend in Haverhill are the semifinals of the Eastern Junior Hockey League. Those games will be played on Saturday and Sunday.

The Warriors are coming off a regular season in which it posted a 14-23-4 record in the Northeast Division of the Empire Hockey League. The team secured its spot in the playoffs following an impressive end of the season. With their backs against the wall, the Warriors came through with a win and a tie through its final three games. A 5-3 defeat of Tri State on February 27 set the stage for an exciting conclusion of the regular season. In what was a momentum-building tie, the Warriors came back from an early 1-0 deficit. Douglas Trude collected a feed from Stephen Ribero to tie the contest at the 10:14 mark of the second period. Then, just 43 seconds into overtime, Christopher Pope came through with the game winner off helpers from Joseph Fimiani and Derek McCoy.

In the evening contest, the Warriors fell behind early but John Maida netted his sixth goal of the year to even the game and earn his team a key tie… and what proved to be a spot in the 2009 Empire Hockey League.
