U-16 & U-16 II Teams Capture Mass Hockey Select Championships
Congratulations go out to the Valley Jr. Warrior U-16 and U-16 II teams which captured Massachusetts Hockey Select Championships this past weekend.
Head Coach Mike Holubowich’s U-16 team defeated the Eastern Mass Senators by a score of 2-1 on Sunday in an overtime Massachusetts State Tier I Championship thriller.
The Warriors found themselves down by one goal heading into the third period but evened the score at the 16:56 mark of the third period thanks to a tally by Ryan Callahan. In the extra period, it was Callahan who lit the lamp again, this time off a feed from Conor Macphee to knock off the Senators and claim the championship title.
In South Boston, Ed Mathews' team won the Massachusetts State Tier II Tournament. The squad defeated the South Shore Seahawks by a score of 2-1 to claim the title.
In that contest, the Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the second period on a goal by Tim Wurman. He was assisted by Nick Bingaman and Jonathan Pate. The Seahawks evened the score midway through that period.
With just over a minute left in the second period, however, Nick Bingaman - off a feed from Alec Atienza - netted the eventual game winner to give the U-16 II's the title.
With the victories, the two Warriors teams have earned themselves a trip to the USA Hockey Tier 1 & II National Tournaments in April 2009 in Chesterfield, MO.
