VJW U-18 Team Finishes 2nd at Labor Day Tournament
Another team making headlines at the 14th Annual Massachusetts Tier I Labor Day Face-Off Invitational Tournament was the Valley Jr Warriors U-18 squad, which finished second at the popular event held during Labor Day weekend at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough.

U18_2_1.jpgThis marks the second straight year that Ken Cleary’s team came up just short of the championship title at the Labor Day Tournament, which features AAA, Tier 1 teams from across the nation.

En route to its championship match, the Warriors cruised through the round-robin portion of the event by posting an untouchable and division-best record of five wins and zero losses. The Warriors outscored their opponents – which included the NH Monarchs, Baystate Breakers, West Seneca, Team Comcast – Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Viper Stars – by a 27-4 margin!

The team’s semifinal contest pitted the Warriors against the South Shore Dynamos. The Warriors prevailed by a score of 5-4 to earn a spot in the championship finale against Team Comcast – Philadelphia.

Although the Warriors were able to knock off Team Comcast by a score of 7-2 earlier in the championship, the team from Pennsylvania came out with something to prove as they pulled out a 5-4 victory to claim the title.

The team’s second-place finish is no doubt a sign of great things to come for this team, which saw four of its players - Chris Kreider, Ben Wiggins, Ryan Heavey and Glenn Stowell selected to compete at the 2008 USA Hockey Player Development Camp.
